27th November 2021

It is with a heavy heart I have to say that Joyce Henderson, chose to pass away peacefully at the end of November 2021. After struggling with cancer for two years, she chose to die at home surrounded by people she loved; with her husband, Luke Henderson, and brother, Alex Leung. She is also survived by her mother and father, Ivy and K.T. Leung. Joyce was a curious child, born in Hong Kong in December 1977. She struggled within the education system in Hong Kong and eventually moved to Canada when she was 19. She had found herself fitting in better in the Canadian education system and found her interest in Psychology and Linguistics at the University of Alberta. After graduating, she spent a year in Beijing, had some great adventures traveling in China, before moving to Vancouver where she found employment at House of Knives. She spent her remaining years working in House of Knives and tackled multiple positions within the company, starting with being a sales associate to eventually moving into the inventory department facilitating purchasing for the e-commerce store. She worked until her health declined to the point she wasn’t able to continue, but she remained involved with her co-workers and the company since she loved the people and work culture. Joyce believes in self-improvement, and she does this by learning new languages (she speaks Cantonese, Mandarin, English and Japanese fluently) or by trying to find new hobbies. Joyce was an avid artist, doll painter and collector, amateaur photographer, baking enthusiast and budding horticulturist. She loves the local nature scene and used to organize day hiking trips with her friends, then follow with some fun cuisine as rewards for the hard work. She loved being involved in the lives of her friends and through the ordeal she has remained caring and compassionate, and never lost her unique sense of humour. She advertised herself as an awkward anti-social person but in reality she loves all her friends and was always eager to spend time with them. She isn’t the type to be the centre of the party but always pleasant to be around for a good obscure geeky joke. Her regret would be missing out on all of the potential board game sessions with her friends – if it wasn’t for covid making gatherings unsafe. She will be missed for her sarcastic sense of humour. She has always been deeply reflective and honest in her words. She is supportive, caring and considerate. She always strives to be a great friend and she shall be sorely missed as such. Thank you to the doctors and nurses at BC Cancer and VGH for taking great care of Joyce. She had only positive things to say about the medical staff she had met along the way. They have been warm and caring and made the worst situations bearable for Joyce. She held the deepest respect for all the medical personnel she encountered. There will not be a service for Joyce. An event will be arranged at a later date to celebrate Joyce’s life. In lieu of any gifts of flowers, please donate to BC Cancer, VGH, or a food bank in Joyce’s name. —————– I (Luke) will be trying to setup an event in the spring/summer to let people get together and remember Joyce, probably at Van Dusen gardens. I’ll also try to setup a more permanent memorial website where people can submit photos and stories of Joyce. Her greatest fear was to be forgotten, and I’d like to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Do you not know that a man is not dead while his name is still spoken?

I haven’t said much about this mask thing and I know I am preaching to the choir here. But WEAR YOUR FUCKING MASK AND STAY HOME. Like I am gonna tell you sittinf by yourself alone in the hospital that you can’t see any of your loved ones is the most fucking terrifying experience you’ll have in your life if you survive this. You will die alone. Or you will make someone die alone..don’t do that to other people. Please. Take this seriously..protect yourself, protect others.

I wanted some oatmeal, so used up the last bit and added bit of milk. Made a cup of tea with milk. Then realized the texture turned weird….. smells bad too. Now I have no tea, no oatmeal. Dammit.
