You know people say “Oh it is PC gone mad, you can’t say things anymore”. I was thinking about it today, about the impact of just “saying things”. When you start to call a group of people by a slur, you dehumanize them. You think of them as “others”, they are not like you at all, you have no common ground and will never understand each other. If enough people around you use the same slur, you wouldn’t give it a second thought on whether or not your perception is correct. Then comes the jokes, because these people are already “others” it is easy to make jokes when you are remotely irritated by any situation with this group involved. Jokes like “send all x to jail”, “kick all x out of the country”, “all x are filthy people who eat filthy things”. Now enough people around you say the same thing, you feel validated. Group x is at fault and they become the scapegoat of everything that isn’t going well in your life. Imagine if public figures like politicians, tv personnel, your favourite movie/music stars also say something similar. You don’t need many of them, you only need one or two people like that. This is now your reality. Group x is horrible, they must be dealt with somehow. Enough talk of this over the years you, a regular person, too can commit atrocious acts because you think you are right. How we speak and the words we use affect how we think and feel. How we think and feel affect our actions. Don’t listen to anyone who promote hate, hate doesn’t bring good things to the world, or your life.
